Alligator (tears) vs. crocodile (tears)

Alligator 的中文叫做「短吻鱷」(一般的鱷魚稱為 crocodile)，是動植物分類中鱷魚目 (crocodile order) 的一環。所以，儘管所有短吻鱷都是鱷魚，但只有一部份的鱷魚是短吻鱷。全世界有多種鱷魚，但只有兩種短吻鱷，一種是產於美國南部的美國短吻鱷 (American alligator，又稱美洲鱷)，另一種是只棲息在長江沿岸的中國短吻鱷 (Chinese alligator)。

除了短吻鱷，鱷魚目還包括凱門鱷 (caiman) 及其他數個品種的鱷魚，但牠們都被簡稱為鱷魚。舉例來說，澳洲鱷魚是 crocodile，不是 alligator。美國短吻鱷無庸置疑地也是 crocodile，但我們通常稱之為 alligator。非洲、東南亞、南美洲和印度也都有鱷魚目所屬的鱷魚品種。

日常生活中與鱷魚有關的用語，最常見的當非 crocodile tears 莫屬；這片語意為「鱷魚的眼淚－比喻為貓哭耗子假慈悲；假悲傷；假哭」，其中 tear 用複數。Crocodile tears 往往與 cry, shed 和 weep 連用 (weep 較少見)，做為這三個動詞的受詞，如 Tony was only crying crocodile tears at his father’s funeral. (東尼在他父親的葬禮上只不過是假裝悲傷而已)。

雖然大家學的都是 crocodile tears，但事實上英文也有 alligator tears 的說法，意思一樣，只是 alligator tears 不像 crocodile tears 那麼常見，它偶爾會出現在美國的寫作和口語中，如 The little girl wasn’t really hurt, but she shed alligator tears anyway. (這小女孩其實沒有受傷，但反正她就是要假哭一下)。
